A Step Forward (ASF)

ASF introduces UC Santa Cruz, the Bayanihan community, and college life to newly admitted students.

ASF focuses on connecting students to peers with similar experiences on this campus and advocating the pursuit of higher education,

A Step Forward’s mission is to help Pilipinx students find a community upon coming to campus, making that transition between high school and university just a little bit easier.

ASF is also housed under Bayanihan, the Pilipinx Student Organization here at Santa Cruz. Bayanihan aims to be a support organization, a cultural resource, and a gathering space for folx to discuss the Filipino and Filipino American experience. By connecting ASF participants to the larger Bayanihan community, we help students find a family on campus and help them network to expand their future opportunities.

More information on Bayanihan can be found on their website at bayanihanucsc.org.

    4th year, CRES & Education, Democracy & Justice (they/she)

This year, I am honored to represent A Step Forward and Bayanihan as one of the Lead Student Initiated Outreach Coordinators at e²! After serving as Bayanihan's Pilipinx Historical Dialogue co-coordinator for the past two years, I hope to bring the same energy of cultivating spaces where we can partake in story telling and amass critical consciousness. Together with the collective knowledge of the Pilipinx community at UCSC and the legacy of student organizers from Engaging Education, I hope to continue pushing forward e²'s commitment towards ensuring that students from historically underrepresented backgrounds continue to have access to higher education. I enjoy hiking and reconnecting with nature with my partner and my family, and in my own personal time I enjoy doing arts and crafts and learning how to DJ!

As the ASF alternate, I am responsible for being the background for e² programming! I mainly will help in going through evaluation forms, budgets, campus coordination, etc. I also am one of the biggest faces you will see in the tours as I will be helping day of :) I ensure that the programming of the tours held are liked and effective for all students by taking in feedback and past programming. Through my experiences as a 4th year I have learned many cultural and basic need resources to help assure students of color and the campus community not only a space in higher education, but also a place to thrive. I will do everything in my power to encourage my Filipinx community to volunteer so that other Filipinx students in those tours can feel representation and the truth of what its like to be a person of color in higher education. In my personal time, I love making art. Specifically community art: whether that be facepainting, murals, or portraits of people.
