ASF introduces UC Santa Cruz, the Bayanihan community, and college life to newly admitted students.

ASF focuses on depicting a peer-to-peer perspective of the student experience on this campus, and advocating the pursuit of higher education. The three-day event provides students with a chance to meet fellow admitted students to the university, as well as make connections with current UCSC students. It is also a chance to get important information on transitioning smoothly into the university. Workshops, tours, discussion, and networking opportunities allow participants to discover the importance of higher education, and highlight the communities and resources available to them in Bayanihan and at the UC overall.

If you interested in attending, or if you have any questions about A Step Forward, please e-mail asf.ucsc@gmail.com. Please be sure to include your name, telephone number, and address in the e-mail.

Finding a community in a large campus like UCSC is difficult but ASF has given me a group of people I can count on since when I came up on ASF 20 in 2016. After being a participant, a volunteer, then intern, my love for outreach and empowering youth grows each year. In addition, advocating for higher education is important especially for young people in the Pilipinx community, where a lot of them are first generation college students or children of immigrants. I'm very excited for this years' ASF and ready to give back to the same program that empowered me 3 years ago.

A Step Forward has had a lasting impact within my college experience. Coming up on the program myself, it has provided me with a supportive space where I felt a sense of cultural identity and belonging as well as opening my mind to new perspectives faced within my community. From participant, to volunteer, to now coordinator, A Step forward is an opportunity for me to give back, impacting many of those who now stand the shoes I once stood in.

One of the most life changing decisions I've ever made was applying and participating in A Step Forward. Coming up on the program has shown me the beauty of coming out of my comfort zone. It also showed me what it meant to be in higher education and gave me a stronger foundation of my identity. As a first generation college student, ASF has impacted me in ways that has reflected in so many different aspects of my life. I hope to encourage other students to break out of their comfort zone and create their paths in higher education.

A Step Forward was the biggest impact on my decision to come to UCSC instead of any other school. I found comfort in knowing that I had a community to come back to before I even decided to continue to pursue higher education. Through ASF, I found those who not only provide the support I need, but those who have become such prominent figures in my life and those of which I look forward in experiencing life-long friendships with.

A Step Forward helped me find a community in which students are able to celebrate culture and focus on education at the same time. Throughout SIO weekend, I learned a lot about what it means to be a minority pursuing higher education away from home, and how amazing it is that people around us were there to help us feel at home!
