“BIG 5”

 

Student of color organizations that represent communities that have been historically oppressed in the U.S., & continue to be oppressed.  Often work in collaboration with each other to address issues affecting all, some, or one of the communities.  Include A/BSA, APISA, MEChA, FSA, & SANAI.  All have offices located side by side on the 2nd floor across from the Baytree Bookstore

MEChA

Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana y Chicano de Aztlan

Nationwide student organization started in 1969 coming out of Chicana/o Movement. Committed to the liberation of nuestra Raza’s minds, bodies, and souls through education. Comprised of autonomous chapters at Universities, Community Colleges, High Schools, & Middle Schools across the U.S.

African/Black Student Alliance

UCSC umbrella organization focused on issues that affect the African/Black community at UCSC and the larger community.

APISA

Asian Pacific Islander Student Alliance

UCSC umbrella organization focused on issues that affect the Asian/Pacific Islander community at UCSC and the larger community.

FSA

Filipino Student Association

UCSC umbrella organization focused on issues that affect the Filipino community at UCSC and the larger community.

SINAI

Student Alliance of North American Indians

UCSC umbrella organization focused on issues that affect the Native American/First Peoples community at UCSC and the larger community.

California Assembly Bill 540

Allows non-resident students who qualify under specific requirements to attend California public higher education and pay in-state fees. Does not qualify students for financial aid.

AFSCME

American Federation of State County & Municipal Employees

AFSCME Local 3299 union represents service workers of the University of California, including food service workers, custodians, and bus drivers.

A Step Forward

Student Initiated Outreach program organized by FSA that brings admitted high school seniors and transfer students to UCSC to expose them to the Filipino experience at UCSC

CAU

Centro Americanos Unidos

Student organization focused on the Central American community at UCSC

CEP

Committee on Ethnic Programming

Funding pot for student of color programming at UCSC. Made up of 1 member of each of the “Big 5” organizations. Won by the demands of students who occupied the Hahn Student Services building after the passing of Prop. 209 ended affirmative action based on race, ethnicity & gender in California.

Chicanos And Latinos Educandonse

Student run program dedicated to retaining Chicana/os & Latina/os at UCSC. Came out of MEChA and is part of the ChUCK coalition of retention programs

Coalition of retention programs dedicated to retaining students of color at UCSC. Housed under Engaging Education (e2).

Union represents clerical workers at UCSC

Community Unified Student Network

Student run program dedicated to retaining Asian/Pacific Islander students at UCSC. Put on by APISA and part of the ChUCK coalition of retention programs

Destination Higher Education

Student Initiated Outreach program organized by A/BSA that brings admitted high school seniors and transfer students to UCSC to expose them to the African/Black experience at UCSC

DRC

Disability Resource Center

Center dedicated to servicing students with disabilities

Engaging Education

Student initiated, run, & lead center that houses student initiated, run, and lead outreach and retention programs that target students of color. Brought about through the activism of students of color.

EOP

Educational Opportunity Programs

Center that targets first generation college, low-income, and educationally disadvantaged student populations to ensure they are retained and graduate and assist with the process of getting to graduate school. Brought about through student activism.

ERCs

Ethnic Resource Centers

African American Resource & Cultural Center, American Indian Resource Center, Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center, Chicano Latino Resource Center. Brought about in part through students activism, including the Hahn Building Student Take Over.

ESOC

Ethnic Student Organization Council

Coalition of student of color organizations coming together to work on the needs and issues important to the respective organizations. Originally known as the Third World And Native American Collective (TWANAC), changed names about 12 years ago. Crucial in establishing e2. Current coordinators represent the “Big 5” organizations.

Getting Educated Now To Empower

MEChA outreach program that targets Raza students and their families to motivate seeking higher education to benefit our communities.

Gay Lesbian Bi-sexual Transgender Intersex Queer Questioning

Umbrella acronym/term used to identify communities/individuals who are outside of traditional binaries of gender (femal/male) and traditional notions of sexuality

Kuya Ate Mentorship Program

Student run program dedicated to retaining Filipino students at UCSC. Put on by FSA and part of the ChUCK coalition of retention programs

Multi Cultural Festival

Coalition event put on by student of color organizations (including MEChA) to raise cultural awareness through various mediums, including food and music.

Student Initiated Outreach

Outreach programs that are created, run, and lead by students, as opposed to university outreach that does not properly service communities of color.

SOAR

Student Organization Advising & Resources

Office located across from the baytree bookstore which supports student organizations with advisors and resources. Students, including MEChistAs, fought to save SOAR from being shut down by administrators, as both students and administrators recognize SOAR as one of the only university resources that supports student activism.

Student Union Assembly

Official group that represents the undergraduates at UCSC. 3 of the 6 officers voted in to postitions on SUA are MEChistAs, and MEChA also has an official representative in the space, along with APISA, A/BSA, SANAI, ESOC, and the Network, as well as 3 reps. from each college.

SWCJ

Student & Worker Coalitoin for Justice

Coalition of workers and students, including MEChA, who work in solidarity on issues that affect both workers and students. Started in the 04-05 school year, which included a successful contract campaign for AFSCME which included a rally/protest that shut down UCSC for a day.

TWANAC

Third World And Native American Collective

Coalition of students of color started in the 70’s primarily to work on getting Third World and Native American Studies (Ethnic Studies, Pan African or Black Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicana/o or Raza Studies, Native American Studies). Conducted a hunger strike at UCSC in 1981 which got the administration to promise the implementation of an Ethnic Studies, which has not been delivered to this day. Later became ESOC.

TWANAS

Third World And Native American Students Collective Press

UCSC newspaper put together by students of color to reflect perspectives of people of color on issues important to people of color, recognizing that CHP does not do this.

UC administrators who are often targeted for the raises in tuition as well as holding out during union contract campaigns.

Meaning "unity" in Swahili

Student run program dedicated to retaining African/Black students at UCSC. Put on by A/BSA and part of the ChUCK coalition of retention programs
